Artists Management
The Belgian marine painter Egidius Linnig was born in Antwerp in 1821 to a family of German origin. He is noted as being the first Belgian artist to paint romantic marine views, and to create them with a strong concern for detail. His work was heavily influenced by the Dutch school as he studied under Dutch artists Jacques van Gingelen and Mathew van Bree.
Linnig worked mainly in oils, painting very cultivated marine views, river scenes and shipyard tableaus. Later he became accomplished in etching and was a major contributor to the renewal of the engraver's art in Belgium. His premature death in Antwerp at the age of 39 cut short this very promising young artist's career.
