Long Bio :
In the repertoire of Helen Smith, harbor scenes of Balboa Island and Newport Beach are at the pinnacle. She moved from her birth place of St. Charles, Illinois after marrying Californian Will Smith, and they settled in on Balboa Island around 1924. She had previously studied art in Boston and at the Milwaukee Art Institute. Once out West, she took up studies in Laguna Beach with Anna Hills, George Brandriff, Millard Sheets and Arthur Beaumont. Her painting have elements in common with the two latter, as watercolorist of remarkable detail, using strong coloration, reflections and shadows.
