William Elmes painted in London at the turn of the 18th century. He is known to have exhibited at the London Academy as early as 1797. Today his work resides in the permanent collections of the Peabody Museum, the U.S. Naval Academy and Yale University among other important venues. This rare painting, composed shortly after the battle itself, documents an important American naval victory that took place just prior to the War of 1812.
