Renowned american yachtsman and marine artist Warren Sheppard was already a successful illustrator and painter when in 1888, at the age of 32, he began traveling to further his artistic studies abroad in Paris and Venice. Of all the works Sheppard created on this sojourn between 1888 and 1893, the scenes he painted of the canals and landmarks of Venice are particularly celebrated.
This attractive example, featuring a tranquil view of Desdemona Palace, shows Sheppard's marked skill as an architectural draftsman as well as his noted talent for soft yet profound coloration. Note the almost photographic appearance achieved in this painting and Sheppard's talent at capturing the subtle distinction of water to reflect the light and shadow radiating from the buildings and sky.
A keen observer and recorder of atmosphere and effect, Sheppard today commands the greatest respect among knowledgeable collectors and museums worldwide, with his Venice paintings considered among his greatest works.
