An artistic work with a deadly purpose, the this large box-lock pistol was the work of a master gunsmith, Joseph Bunney of London in the last quarter of the 18th Century. The silver wire scrollwork inlay throughout the wood carries a floral motif and a large seashell design. The weapon's engraved work is all clearly defined and kept to a minimalist's taste, with the maker's name and London prominently displayed on ribbon banners on each lock plate. The hammer and table are rather large, and would have held a considerable amount of powder to fire the large diameter bullet.
The smooth fluted barrel is completed after its first stage with an octagonal section that again possesses nice engravings, beadwork with flower heads. The wood ramrod is held by two slide loops near where the British Royal Tower of London cipher proofs mark the barrel and its armory connection. This is a fine example of an prized 18th Century firearm.
Pistol Measures 13½ Inches Overall with an 8 Inch Barrel.
