A cased set of the highest quality, these percussion dueling pistols are made rarer still with the personalization of their presentation in 1864 to Lieutenant Colonel Charles E. Fuller three years after his graduation from West Point Military Academy with the rank of Captain in 1861. Born in 1831, he was a direct descendant of Thomas Fuller, the author of "Fuller's Warships" and Rev. Daniel Fuller, who has with troops as they prepared to battle at Bunker Hill in the American Revolution.
Gifted in the final year of the American Civil War, Fuller served for several more years in the American Military. He was First Lieut. of Company G of Woburn under Capt. Charles S. Converse in the Massachusetts Fifth Regiment under Colonel George H. Peirson.
Beautifully crafted work in carved floral relief throughout the ebony hardwood, both ends of the 9½ inch long barrel are decorated with engravings and even the metal of the hammer and plates are excellently marked with Gothic floral patterns. This pair of firearm pistols is complete and original working order. Engraved with the Liege signature mark in the oval on the barrels, the Belgium weapon maker produced for markets all over the world. The hardwood case is complete with some original and some replacement accessories, from the bullet mold to the ramrod and hammer.
The case is nicely grained and has the presentation brass oval plate inlaid in the lid, as well as the front brass key escutcheon and is lined throughout with a plush dark-green velvet. This is an exceptional set of Continental dueling pistols with a substantial American provenance from the Civil War and beyond.
