A quality flintlock pistol of a most intimidating character, this firearm would have been the possession of a man of both wealth and authority. Beautiful incised floral and decorative ornamentation accent the deadly purpose of this large pistol, and it shows signs of both age and use. Signed on the lock “D. Egg” this is the work of one of the premier firearm makers of his age, Ursus Christian Egg, known as Durs Egg. He was a gun maker to British Royalty, including King George III and the Prince of Wales. One multiple barrel flintlock pistol similar to this was presented by a British admirer to Napoleon, it is recorded.
The barrel is marked ‘London’ as well, with 18th Century London proof marks, a “P” and “V’ under crowns. The dual octagonal barrel over-under arraignment is fired by two triggers, the right for the top barrel, left for the one below. A deep rain-proof powder pan and hammers work the flints into action, and an excellent and unusual turned and grooved metal ramrod and a traditional crosshatched wood grip complete the firearm. This is an exceptional early and rare style flintlock pistol by one of the premier British gun makers.
