A large and significant work of scrimshaw on a baleen panel, captures scenes from the Whaleship ISABELLA, during a four-year Pacific Ocean voyage 1831-1835, under Captain Joseph Taber of New Bedford. It is twice pictured in the important Norman Flayderman book, "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders".
The baleen panel measures 20 1/2 x 5 inches, and the baleen is exceptionally light and the scrimshaw vigscnenes clearly visible, with four scenes shown. They are: top left, "Ship HORNET Blockading English Harbor"; lower left, a sea battle between American and English ships; upper right, classic whaling scene inscribed "The ISABELLA on the Whaling Ground"; and lower right, a whaling scene with a struck whaleboat in mid-air. Nicely cased.
