A quality full dockyard builders model from the 1930s, S.S. PORTFIELD is a perfect example of an early 20th Century large cargo carrier. This fine model represents her under C.E. Hinde & Co. ownership of Cardiff. Her black and Liverpool rose hull is a substantial one, and she's dressed throughout with silver-plated fittings, numerous booms positioned to work her four principle cargo holds. The wood decks are painted black and traditionally inked, as is the bridge and helm. The gloss black stack with the red Hinde "H" sets it off completely.
She was built in 1929 by Craig, Taylor & Co., Ltd. of Stockton-on-Tees, and christened S.S. BLAIRLOGIE. She sold and served as PORTFIELD in 1935-36 for Hinde, and then was briefly S.S. GROVEDINE in 1936 before returning to her original name. We believe this original model was refitted for the Hinde company upon purchase, with corrected plaques installed.
Ships of this class proved time and again to be the backbone of worldwide commerce in the late 19TH and early 20TH Centuries. At 400'L x 52'3"B x 22'D measurements, PORTFIELD's single screw propeller was powered by a three-cylinder triple expansion engine by Blair & Co. of Stockton-on-Tees, capable of 373 HP. Four large deck holds are complemented by the smaller hold near the rear of the officers' quarters midship, for the security of perishable and secure cargoes. Re-christened BLAIRLOGIE once again, she met her fate in the first year of World War II, sunk by German U-30 in 1939.
