A detailed and interesting port scene, this is potentially the River Mersey in Liverpool, with this view either predating or during the construction of the iconic Pier Building built between 1904 and 1907. The building in this painting is similar but does not have the central dome.
The large square rigged ship in the center is being pulled by a paddlewheel tugboat. The ship's crew is up in the rigging in several places and out on deck with one at the bow signaling to the tug. Surrounding these ships are small vessels including fishing boats and in the foreground an ore barge, all with crews at work aboard.
The atmosphere is bright with warm clouds mixing with the smoke from the ships and from buildings on the shore. The colors of ship and sky reflect on the waters, tying the painting together to create a scene which is both harmonious and interesting. One of the better works we have seen by this artist.
