A luminous painting of one of the great steamships of her day, Anton Otto Fischer captures the excitement of arriving by luxury liner into the great metropolis under full pomp.
The QUEEN MARY, flying the American flag on the foremast to signify her travel to America is escorted by several tugboats with the New York skyline and Brooklyn Bridge visible in the background. A helicopter hovers in the upper left corner and fireboat salutes the vessel alongside.
A Royal Mail Steamer of the Cunard Line, the QUEEN MARY was built by John Brown and Company in Clydebank, Scotland in 1934. She was the flagship of the Cunard Line from May 1936 until October 1946 when she was replaced by the line's Queen Elizabeth.
The ship was retired in 1967 and today resides in permanent mooring in Southern California's San Pedro/Long Beach Harbor welcoming thousands of visitors each year to relive the glory days of ocean liner travel.
