A fine line scrimshaw work on whale ivory, this work has several scenes and is dated 1871 at the top. Just beneath the date on the face is the Three-Plumed Crown of the Prince of Wales, belonging to the heir-apparent to be the next British Monarch. Following this is a charming scene of two sailors in tradition British uniforms waving hello near a barrel of spirits. This is set within a bordered edging, and beneath is a three-masted sailing ship.
The reverse has a personalized image of the noonday sun, a potted plant, and a lovely woman in a dress. The tooth has several other floral and decorative border elements as well. To finish it off, it is set on a 20th Century wood display stand so the tooth remains upright. A very good sailors scrimshaw whale tooth.
