This painted metal box bears the name Lieutenant G. L. Hutchinson of the US Navy and inside includes pieces vital to the officers dress uniform- epaulets, a sword Belt and a very fine bicorne hat. The case fits the pieces perfectly, keeping them safe but compact for life aboard ship.
The box and each of the pieces inside are marked Gieves of London. Founded in 1771, the famed menswear retailer and tailor still has a London shop at No. 1 Savile Row making them one of the oldest continually operating bespoke tailors in the world. The company was founded on serving officers of the British Army and the Royal Navy and known for their fine quality. The company has held royal warrants since 1809.
