Bears the officer's name, F.H. Roberts, as well as a maker's mark for Horstmann of Philadelphia. Horstmann marked swords in this manner between 1859 and 1863.
From Joe Vallejo's personal collection and in excellent condition.
The sword features an outstanding engraved blade with classic Horstmann naval adornments including a fouled anchor with shield of the United States, an eagle perched above a cannon, a group of thirteen stars, a riband marked USN, and a ship's mast with trident, arms and USN flag, along with floral and vinework and a rope entwined with oak leaves and acorns. The blade also has the owner's name in fine lettering set off in a geometric design.
The hilt has the original fish skin grips with twisted brass wire wrapping. The leaf shaped guard is marked USN with oak leaf and acorn motifs and a sea serpent form. The leather scabbard has brass square knot motifs and a sea serpent on the drag. The sword retains the original knot.
A great collector's showpiece with clear markings and engravings.
