Though mostly associated with Napoleon, the Bicorne hat was used as a common military and naval headpiece throughout Europe and America, coming into wide use from about 1790 until 1910. A fine tin case would keep a dress military hat in good shape while not being worn.
The case is marked with the retailers crest: Hobson & Sons, Military Outfitters, 94 St. Martins Lane, Charing Cross, London, WC & at 43 &44 Artillery Place, Woolwich. The bicorne is bears a makers mark on the inside: Moss & Co. Ltd., Military Outfitters, 20, 21 King St., Covent Garden. Amazingly both companies are still in business in the UK- Hobson & Sons still offers military uniforms and Moss is now a men's fashion company.
