This Chronometer was made the one of the greatest British clockmakers Dent and Company. Established in 1814 by Edward J. Dent, the business was passed down through several generations and is still in business today.
Dent is responsible for two of the world's most famous clocks- the Great Clock for the Houses of Parliament in London otherwise known as Big Ben and the Standard Clock at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich which was responsible for keeping Greenwich Mean Time. As this chronometer notes, they supplied Queen Victoria with chronometers and Dent marine chronometers were taken on Darwin's 1831 voyage on board HMS BEAGLE.
This example is in very good condition, in its original mahogany and brass case with heart escutcheon. The chronometer bears the maker's mark and serial number on the face and the case, and the case also includes the broad arrow mark of the British Admiralty.
