This original period photograph offers a very historic view of the Huangpu River and the Puxi Historical District, also known as The Bund, captured before the modern skyscrapers arose behind the late 19th and early 20th century buildings along the waterfront.
Clearly visible are the iconic Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank building, built in 1923, and next to it, The Customs House. The Customs House began construction in 1927 and in this photo is not yet complete with the familiar shape of the clock tower just an outline of its exposed metal structure.
The river is active with a collection of Chinese watercraft and workers in the near docks on the Pudong side on the photo's far left. In addition to the many small boats at sail on the river are four large warships- from left to right these are: HMS HAWKINS of Great Britain, Cruiser JULES MICHELET of France, USS HURON of the United States and SHOHO of Japan.
The photo is sepia toned and in good condition for its age. Housed in a simple period frame and under glass.
