Secours - 28 5/8 inches high, 9 inches wide at base, 18 at widest
Secours, French for Rescue - Signed verso Waagen Sept for Arthur Waagen, a German sculptor (1833-1898). A sailor stands at the very tip of the bow of a small vessel in heavy seas. At his feet a large anchor sits on a coiled length of line which he is reaching back to throw out to sea, rescuing a person overboard.
Cod Fishing - 28 inches high, 9 3/4 diameter at base, 15 1/4 at widest. Clock face 3 3/4 inches diameter.
A fisherman stands on the bow of a small boat ready to throw out a long line for cod fishing. Few industries were as important as the cod fishery to the American Northeast. In the 19th century it was common for cod fishermen to use handline fishing methods. Smaller boat would be rowed out from larger vessels and lines with multiple baits dropped.
This statue includes a clock in the base, with an open interior for the movement. The base includes small details of sea life including fish and crab.
Both statues are dramatic and are well sculpted with good detail.
