Redmore, an extremely popular English artist, found representations of the might of the British sailing navy and merchant ships to be popular topics. As with this fine pair, his works often visually told of the duality of the ships which toured the harbor calms and the aggressive north sea off the country's eastern shores.

The fine details of the ships and sailors fit into the overall perspective of the scenes with flair. Evidently Redmore was well versed with the mechanics onboard sailing ships. His ships ride lightly loaded, in the active ocean scene. An armed third-rate clears the coast, headed for Saxony, while another sails the coastline. The calm scene shows several ships with a contingent of seamen in their dress blue uniforms, returning to their warship with provisions, while three fishermen pull a drag net. Redmore echos the compositional style of his likely mentor, John Ward, as well as his contemporary, J.W. Carmichael, with whom he visited on occasion.

His trained eye captured the subtle changes within the skies and waterways for his brush. The soft emerald and English greens are pleasantly complemented with the luminescence of his skies and voluminous clouds.
