Montague Dawson has elegantly portrayed in this work one of the most famous sailing yachts of all time, the 316 foot long SEA CLOUD. Built in 1931 at the Krupp yard in Germany SEA CLOUD was a gift for heiress Marjorie Post from her husband, financier E.F. Hutton. Later owned by Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo, SEA CLOUD in the 1950's became a spectacular addition to the Southern California coast and a favorite among Hollywood film luminaries.
The stately SEA CLOUD has defied the fate of her sister yachts from that lavish age and still sails today. Dawson has portrayed her with a black hull and wearing the burgee of the New York yacht club at her foretop. This is how she appeared briefly just prior to World War II when she was used for diplomatic entertaining by Marjorie Post's second husband, U.S. Ambassador Joseph E. Davies.
An outstanding example of Dawson's skill, the artist has captured all of the grandeur of this magnificent yacht with the reverence for sailing ships that was his legacy. In a timeless portrayal, SEA CLOUD carves her path through a lively sea with all of her 35,000 square feet of sail set and trimmed to perfection.
