Warmth countered with subtle touches of a evening's cool approach bless this coastal scene by San Diego's premier resident artist. Braun set-up his point Loma Peninsula Studio the year he first arrived, 1910, assisted by Madame Katherine Tinguely, with whom he held a close philosophical association. The near summer weather which prevailed year-round appealed directly to Braun's believe that humanity and its achievements are only a small part of nature.
Braun's interplay of outdoor light and spectrum of colors earned him a glowing reputation as one of the brightest and earliest stars of California's evolving Plein Air Movement. This work contributes to his legacy with its shifting ground and floral hues expressing the near-eternal summer of this stretch of Southern California. The pale colors in the sky speak of the waning day, while the ocean rolls with the late afternoon high tide.
Showing the lean twisting shape of the coastal eucalyptus trees which came with earlier travelers, museums hold works by the artist which share these subjects from his first ten years in San Diego. He would briefly live elsewhere, but chose to call this area home for the rest of his days.
