Carl Frederick Sorensen (1818-1879)

Carl Frederik Sorensen Carl Frederik Sorensen was a Danish marine artist, born in Besser on the island of Samsa on February 8th 1818. Sorensen attended the Danish Academy from 1843 to 1846. While at the academy he took part in the decoration of the Thorvaldsen Museum and studied perspective under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg at the end of 1845.

In 1846 he began his travels aboard a number of sea faring vessels, sailing across the Mediterranean continuing on to visit Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and England. In later years he sailed with the Danish Navy around Helgoland and the Baltic. It is his firsthand experience at sea and growing up along the Danish coast that lent such realism and excellence to his paintings of sea and shore. He is particularly well known for his study of the weather and its effect on the sea which led to his luminous style. In later years he was known for more idyllic scenes, charming and atmospheric, winning his widespread acclaim.
