George Vemply Burwood (1844-1917)

The artist was born as son of a fisherman, in Lowesoft, Suffolk on the North Sea along the Eastern coast of England. His path to the sea stretched from England to North Europe.Apparently an engineer, Burwood was proficient in working with wood, especially at model-building. It was this capability which sparked his taking up painting, initially as a ship's portraitist working in watercolor and oils.He was commissioned to make a model for Princess Alexandra the model of which is now housed in the Lowesoft Museum among other Burwood models and paintings.
