A marine artist of Massachusetts, Hendricks Hallett was born in Charlestown, Mass. and after art studies in Antwerp and Paris, he came home to set up shop in Boston. He would later paint out of Fenway Studios alongside his wife, artist Florence Hallett. Known to work outdoors, sketching many impressions of a single scene, and recording special color notes with swabs, he'd return to the studio to translate what he had seen to oil on canvas, and he was extremely proficient with watercolors as well. Maritime scenes and colorful views of Boston Harbor dominate his output, and he exhibited throughout New England. He began exhibiting at the Boston Art Club in 1877, and in addition joined the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters. He frequently exhibited at Poland Springs Art Shows for more than 20 years. |
