This crisp day along the Northeastern seaboard is a pleasing work of art, layered with subjects at multiple levels. In the primary focal spot, along a clean sandy shore, two men attend to a boat, drawing viewers with casual speculative interest in what they are set upon doing. The second level is the brilliant blue water with slightly rolling surf and a coastwise schooner at anchor before the more distant anchorages of numerous white-hulled yachts.

The headland is the third element, with its local architecture including several residences, a light house tower and a ship building facility at the water's edge. It may well be the south shore of Monhegan Island, with the perilous stretch named Norton's Ledge, after our marine artist. Fourth, the expanse of soft blue sky opens the field of view to infinity and casts soft light over the scene.

The Maine coast was a favorite location for Norton once he returned from Europe with his wife to live in New York City after 1900. Some of his finest works were inspired by the far-north region, and marine-themed paintings such as this are widely sought after for their simplicity and uncommon charm.
