A pair of dueling pistols marked with interesting clues to their origins and use, the foremost of these being the Swiss' Kuchenreiter Family gold cartouche on the rear of the barrels, as well as the name Johann Christoph on the barrel top. The lock markings, of the maker most likely, interpret loosely as the Earnest Family of Somerset, on record as English makers of firearms. It is very possible that different parts of these fine guns were made by specialty artisans, and the "maker" of the weapons added his own touches, parts and refinement to the completed assembly.

The barrels measure 9 inches in length with an octagonal cast, and the percussion cap fire point is still sharp and articulate. The crosshatched carved grips hold their dark oiled characteristic hardwood color. Set is complete with a loading rod, bullet mold, powder measure and an interesting multi-function tool with hammer, punch, screwdriver heads and a caliper measuring tool.

The all wood case is lined with green velvet and the pieces are silhouette fitted in the French style. The duelers show some obvious use, and the bullet mold has extensive blueing from heat. The case shows its age, and while it no longer locks closed, the presence of the pistols displayed may well have been enough to keep their bearer secure in their day.
