In direct homage to Francis A. Silva and the precursor Luminist artists of the American East, Warren Sheppard sets out to walk in their wake in this painting. He physically left an implied trail in the sand, running parallel to the surf, where the wash once reached, while a broken pillar of clouds echoes the fate of a ship left with remnant ribs and timbers. It is peaceful yet melancholy scene, and fitting that the "star" of the show is the sun and its early rising light over the Atlantic Ocean.

The subtle interplay of colors works in this instance as the deep green ocean is known to be cold, the variation of the sand from cool wet to wispy and dry. There is present a conflagration of breeze, turning the main cloud bank upward at its edge and driving slowly the detached tuffs. The prismatic light cast through the cloud moisture and Earth's atmosphere is the medium for the creation of the radiant luminism of the orange glow throughout the sky. All simple yet worked into the composition in a very tight, natural order.

Sheppard has sewn the picture with interesting geographic lines. The horizon divides the realms and yet is divided by the hulking hull. The shore break splits the swell while its repetition reaches the viewer perfectly perpendicular to the sunlight cast reflection across its plane. Everything reads left to right until the inverted cloud once again draws the eye back around to revisit and inspect the overall fine work. The emotional center draws not from the bones of the ship, but from the visit to the shore itself.
