This solid bronze 18th century cannon shows a graceful stepped design typical of its era. It's rare for French cannons of this period to survive, as so many old cannons were melted down during the French Revolution. Only a few of this model have been found. A few modifications show that this cannon was in use well after it was made- The cascabel has been shortened and rounded off so that it will fit a naval carriage, like the quality period style carriage which has been made for the piece. Also the original vent has been plugged and another added on the top of the tube. Marked 89 on the right trunnion and 142lbs on the left. Tube is 37 ¾ Inches long, 8 ½ Inches wide at trunions. Carriage is approximately 19 ¾ inches at widest. 2 ¼ inch bore. |
