At the bottom it reads: To the honorable Sir John Eyles Baronet, Sub-Governour of the South-Sea-Company, this plate of the Whale or Greenland Fishery, is most humbly inscribed. Marked: Bafton F. on the left and E. Kirkall S. on the right. John Eyles was appointed to the post listed in 1721. Elisha Kirkall was a prolific English engraver (1682-1742). |
