A very fine looking presentation, the model has a great look. Judging from the brightwork and the overall quality of the model, those crossing the channel in this ship traveled in high style. Displayed on a pair of turned brass pedestals, the model is presented within its original glazed mahogany display case.
¼ in.=1 ft. scale. The model's hull is built up from the solid in lifts, with a painted red bottom, white waterline and black topsides, rudder and twin propellers, the deck with single funnel, mast and deck details including stern docking station and steering gear, upper deck with bench seating, ventilators and skylights, 4 lifeboats on davits, open bridge with engine telegraphs and ships bells.
History of the Vessel:
The S.S. SEAFORD was built by the Clyde Shipping and Shipbuilding of Dumbarton, Scotland for Denny Brothers. She was launched in April 1894 and began work for the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry service. The following year while navigating through a thick fog in the English Channel, she was hit by the French cargo ferry S.S. LYON which was owned by the same company. The SEAFORD sank within twenty minutes 25 miles off Newhaven however all her passengers and crew were rescued by the LYON which was also badly damaged.
