13 ⅛ x 9 Inches x 3 Inches

Circa 1800

A traditonal exterior of a marine narrative on the lid of the box echoes a bit of the irony of foreign-born – most of French – prisoners-of-war in British captivity making exquisite works of art to sell to the British public. Most such artifacts play up the angle of British superiority and victory, where this box shows a French Ship prominently on the lid in a moment’s calm off an English Fort. Within, the very colorful marquetry and parquetry inlaid and worked straw and wood shows a floral urn design on the underside of the lid, and the sections of the six compartments are further enhanced by the small removable tray piece in the center top square.
