Signed LR: J.E. Buttersworth

Circa 1870

This small and appealing image from James E. Buttersworth is a panoramic depiction of what appears to be the northern shoreline of Buzzards Bay near Mattapoisett, Massachusetts.

An afternoon squall moves in along the shore on a summer day causing the boats in the bay to reef down their sails to ride out the temporary weather change. Buttersworth’s well known tiny brush strokes capture the village of Mattapoisett, it’s lighthouse and the sailing yachts with his trademark clarity and precision.

Mounted in a new 22k gold frame this fine little painting is in excellent condition and was obtained through a private California estate. It is inscribed verso on a label; Mrs. J.L. Firm or Miss A.L. Stryker or Miss E.S. Stryker which is believed to be a descending provenance of the owners.
