32½ x 44½ Inches Framed Framed

With this light-filled image Dawson has captured a perfect day of sailing competition on the waters of the Solent (the narrow channel between the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth Harbor). The two English Yarmouth-One class sloops have gone outside on their downwind leg in order to find more wind. Three other Yarmouth sloops trail them closer to shore. MAGNOLIA leads with GREYWING inching up to windward trying to cover. The match is keen with both crews at the ready trying to gain the slightest edge, promising a close finish.

The classic Montague Dawson sea and sky is conspicuous in this picture: the strong winds of the Solent churn the wave tops into foam with clouds portrayed so well they seem to move across the canvas. This is Dawson at his artistic best; portraying an ocean filled with dynamic action, natural beauty and human drama.

Worthy of note is the exceptional quality of light in this painting. Remarkably bright when compared to the greater majority of Dawson's massive catalog of work, this image offers an overall bright sensation that complements the competitive spirit and carefree atmosphere of the scene.
