11 3/4 inches long overall, 6 inch barrel

Dated 1845

The US Naval Model 1842 was a gun made for the Navy between 1842 and 1847. Ames Manufacturing Company was a Inchessignificant provider of sidearms, swords, light artillery, and heavy ordnance for the Union in the American Civil War.

The lockplate is marked USN 1845 at the rear, and N.P. AMES, SPRINGFIELD, MASS above the trigger. The barrel is marked USN, 1845, with Inspector marks which appear to be RC over a P. Beneath the barrel is a captured steel ramrod. Round, smooth bore .54. Brass elements form the trigger guard, a ring around the grip and barrel and a piece inset into the butt all of which show use with a nice patina. The metal of the mechanism and barrel is also in good condition with a nice patina.
