9 3/4 inch barrels

Late 18th Century

This pair of dueling pistols are outstanding early examples with all of the elements most desired by collectors and made by H.W. Mortimer, the most highly regarded British gunsmith of the period.

Each pistol is engraved on the lockplate "H.W. Mortimer" as well as on each top flat of the barrel: "H.W. Mortimer, London – Gun-Maker to His Majesty." There are engraved decorative elements include delicate floral and foliate designs as well as flags and drums on the lockplate, a common motif for Mortimer guns. One of the ramrods is original, the other is a later replacement. The guns and accessories are housed in their period bespoke oak and velvet case with brass accents.

We’ve been told these have London proofs but they aren’t visible. 18th century proof marks were sometimes put under the barrel, so it’s possible these would be present in that location and visible if the guns were taken apart.

Henry W. Mortimer was appointed gunmaker to King George III in 1783 and supplied firearms not only to the King and Royal family but also to the Royal Mail Coaches. He was the best known and most highly regarded of this time, working out of the 89 Fleet Street location between 1782-1799. Today, Mortimer pistols are just as valued and are among the most sought after by firearms collectors.

The engraved H.W. Mortimer trade label on the case’s interior is also a rare artifact by another craftsman- London engraver Garnett Terry. Two Garnett Terry trade cards from Mortimer pistols, including one of this same design, are in the collection of the British Museum, London.
