During Cimiotti’s extensive travels within the United States, he painted many scenes of areas that have since become world famous. Such is the case with this early view of Newport Harbor and Balboa.

Barely recognizable today after years of development, this unique perspective seems to be of the area now known as “restaurant row” on Pacific Coast Highway as seen from the bay. What appears to be the old Rosan complex can be seen in the left of this painting.

One of the great schooner yachts that called at Newport in the 1920s and 30s lies mid-channel while a large coastal schooner rides anchored “in ballast”, her masts un-stepped probably being re-rigged at Rosan. A very fascinating image of Newport Beach in days gone by, this painting is also a fine example of Cimiotti’s plein-air technique and colorful palette.
