Signed LR: E. Boudin – 97 Douarnenez

1897

The affection Eug Inchesne Boudin held for his native land radiates from this painting of the Brittany Coast Harbor of Douarnenez. A true natural talent, Boudin translated with brush and oil the visual beauty he observed firsthand. Here he has composed a broad, sweeping atmosphere within which he shares the intangible qualities of color and light as no other artist before him.

Born to a family descended from a long lineage of sailors and fishermen, Boudin possessed a great love of nature and affinity for maritime subjects. Everyday life along the French coast produced a wealth of subjects that Boudin was to paint throughout his career. This very large work from the artist’s late period is a fine example of sunlit sea and presents evidence why Boudin earned the title "The King of Skies" from his peers.

Boudin’s fluid brush technique and skill as a colorist has captured an active day's sailing in the bay. A red jacketed figure, a signature touch of Boudin's, rides within the row boat while minute crimson touches also exists on the distant headland and rocky central island. Often emulated, seldom rivaled, never surpassed; Boudin owns an international respect for his work that will continue for centuries.
