An extremely rare and excellently conserved navigation instrument dated 1717, this backstaff, or Davis Quadrant, was made by Bejamin Macy of London for William Brymer. It is impact stencil signed with the maker, his Hermitage Bridge, Wrapping, London location, dated and owner's name owner.
