GREAT REPUBLIC was sister ship to YOUNG AMERICA. She was designed and built by William H Webb at his shipyard on the East River in Manhattan just above were the Brooklyn Bridge now stands. Webb was one of the founding members of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. The Webb Yard also constructed Caissons that were used in the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge towers.
