Oil on Canvas Board
16 x 20 Inches
Signed LR: Emile A. Gruppe

Circa 1930s
22 x 26 Inches Framed

A special work by this talented Cape Ann artist, it holds a rare, colorful place in his artistic output. Possibly a Caribbean Island or more likely a Florida Keys location, either way it is a snippet of an isolated paradise with white sands and lush plants, all portrayed by Gruppe with a thick and active impasto. A man in a rich red shirt holds the bow of his boat, the tone of the shirt echoed in the glow of the fauna. Birds are active in the sky that has clouds and levels of texture the out-stride the ocean.

The scene isn’t void of civilization. Besides the boat man and his vessel, a remnant fence exists, with pilings to which one would tether a boat. An island staple, several coconut trees appear to have plenty of harvest available. Really a charming island visual by an artist more known for Northeast harbors and ships. Gruppe, born in Rochester, N.Y., spent quite a bit of time during his career on vacation, painting in Florida
