Oil on Canvas
15 x 24 Inches
Signed LR: G Loiseau

Circa 1910
26 ½ x 34 Inches Framed

Superb with soft cool coloration and a nice high elevated view of the cove beach of Fécamp along the Normandy Coast, the resort and fishing town is nestled between Etretat and Dieppe. This coast is home to the oldest seaside resorts in France, playgrounds of the nobility and citizens of Paris alike.

The impasto texture painted on this canvas by the artist is fascinating to follow in exploring his application process. Aggressive, chaotic strokes are tightly followed with dainty touches and flourishes of color, some blended to make new hues while others stand clean and pure from the brush. Rich with illusional elements both architectural and human, which share a strong red pigment, the floral elements of the bluff help contrast the blue tone carried in sea and sky. The sweeping wind comes off the sea and shapes all the forms.

While the beaches are a top flight attraction, Fécamp is world renown for its Benedictine Abbey and its production of the brandy-based liquor that carries its name. Like it, Loiseau found international success from Fécamp, and continues to be popular with discriminating collectors of the best works from the Post-Impressionist era.
