A fine quality model of an early bulk tanker for her American owners of the Chile Steamship Company of New York. Built by the Blythswood Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. of Glasgow, Scotland in 1922, the Clyde River yard was founded only three years prior and built tankers for the next 40-plus years. CHUKY was the third ship built by the yard. Sheridans Steamship Company are listed as her registered owners in the "Lloyds Register of Shipping", where it has been confirmed that they acted as the British agents for the Chile Steamship Co.
CHUKY measured 440' length x 56' beam x 34' depth. Running from both coasts of America, she delivered to prosperous and growing markets for refined oil for a steady six years. Misfortune struck the ship and crew when on a voyage from San Pedro to Yokohama on February 15, 1928, she was sunk by an internal explosion 200 miles from port.
This extremely detailed model contains numerous gold-plated fitting, vents and rails. The superstructure of the main bridge glows with the light coming through the upper glass and forward panes, while the triple-mirror background illuminates the full-bodied form of the ship. The stack is positioned within the quarter-deck, her simple white-red-white bands horizontally arraigned. A top quality cased half-model of an early tanker of the 20th Century by model maker Hugh MacMillan of Greenock, Scotland for the builders.
