5.5 Inch Diameter Globes, 9 Inch H x 8.75 Inch Diameter in Cradles
Newton and Sons, Chauncery Lane, London Labels

One Dated 1847

This is an excellent pair of mid-19th Century English desk globes, celestial and terrestrial, by the makers Newton of London. Their clear coloration and delineated heavenly characters and earthly geography are outstanding to view. They are such a fine matched presentation that they are amongst the very best we've seen. The terrestrial globe is dated 1847, while the celestial is labeled to indicate it's a bit earlier.

Set in turned wood cradles of ebony with four legs and well defined brass meridians, the globes are clearly marked with numerous references to the importance of London and Greenwich as the center of the navigate-able world.
