6 Inches high x 6 Inches wide

Circa 1800

This jug depicts a sailor bidding farewell to his sweetheart before departing on a voyage. Scenes of sailors leaving or returning from trips were popular subjects of prattware jugs.

Based in Staffordshire, England, prattware production was started by Felix Pratt, and his factory operated from 1775 to 1885, though there were potteries in other locations throughout England and one in Scotland, as well. Prattware decoration is usually done in relief and then painted. Colors found on prattware are often limited due to high firing temperatures.

On this particular jug, the colors are indeed limited, but the stark contrast to the white background creates a rich visual interest.
