In this work, we find one of George Howell Gay’s better oil paintings, reminiscent in composition of the East Coast works of A.T. Bricher and gallery favorite, J.E.C. Petersen.
The waves come with linear faces until they catch and crash the rocky promontory, the heavy white clouds allow a sliver of blue sky to brighten the day and tall sails rise above the wet horizon to show the active lanes of sailing ships. The atmospheric composition is vast and appealing, and it is set in a ornate original gilt frame with a unique presence.
