Dated 1878, this painting of the Transatlantic Sail/Steam Packet SOMERSET is an example of Jacobsen's highly sought after, early, quality work in the field of ship portraiture. This painting is a superb example of the unique combination of elements that would later become Jacobsen’s trademark.

The feeling of movement is achieved by placing the vessel on a rakish angle as she climbs a dramatic sea. Jacobsen’s treatment of water in this work Is one of finest examples of his skill we have seen. The sea is at once translucent, fluid and forceful. The vessel is crisply detailed and realistically placed in her element.

Built in 1875 by Richardson, Duke & Co. of Stockton, the SOMERSET was one of the earliest transatlantic steam packets. Owned by the Great Western Steamship Company, whose livery may be seen on her stack and house flag, she sailed on regularly scheduled voyages between Bristol and New York. She was sold to foreign interests in 1885.
