This fine yacht portrait features the luxury yacht WINTONIA under way in a heavy sea beneath a rapidly darkening sky. She is probably making her way home in an attempt to beat the coming storm, as her crew has set two riding sails to balance the vessel nicely and to smooth her motion against the rising swells.
This work shows very well De Simone’s composition talents and skill as a colorist. Note the strong contrast between the background of sea and sky and the graceful lines of the hull. Excellent detail is shown in the fine rigging lines, tiny crew figures and the delicate scrollwork on the bow and stern.
The luxury steam yacht WINTONIA was built by Day, Summers and Co. In Southampton, England in 1894 for her owner F.H. Putnam. She weighed 233 tons and measured 137’LOA x 19.2’B x 11.2’D. We are fortunate to be able to offer with this painting a rare original photo of the vessel in tandem with this fine painting.
