18 Long x 7 3/4 High Inches

Circa 1850

Though mostly associated with Napoleon, the Bicorne hat was used as a common military and naval headpiece throughout Europe and America, coming into wide use from about 1790 until 1910. This metal sign would have been hung outside a shop, perhaps in France given the shape, to show potential customers what was available inside. It’s likely this hung outside a clothier dedicated to outfitting soldiers and sailors who at the time had to provide their own uniforms.
